Grandmaster At Last

2007-07-19 14:19:06

It's taken me the best part of a year, but I finally got the Gm rank on the original TGM game. Next goal is 500 in TA Death.

Oh yeah, and to get 8000 wifi points. Maybe if the hub was working I'd have more of an incentive for that.

2 Player

2007-04-20 14:54:51

The hub seems to just be refusing outright to update me, though it seems to have broken again over the past few days.

Still, I've been playing a fair amount of wifi, and my rating has been all over the place between 7300 and 7900.
Currently 7670 or something.

Recently 4p has started to dry up for players, so I've moved to 2p. Surprisingly, I've actually been doing extremely well, picking up from the 7300's to the 7600's extremely quickly.
I'm beating 7400 players roughly 10-1 now, which is far better than the split matches I would get previously. Maintaining a high 7k score on 2p now seems a real possibility.
I'll continue to keep playing 2p until I start hitting a block and my score stops decreasing.
Could be handy to quickly build back up the huge numbers of points you can lose on the odd 4p loss. I can't see myself using 2p to break 8k though. I'm still not that great at it.

TGM

2007-04-06 10:40:18

I've not really played Tetris DS much lately. This is partly down to my router playing up, and consistently disconnecting me, because there's no furniture in our lounge, and the nearest seat is quite far away.
Still, new suite in now, so I should be able to play.

The main reason is that all my Tetris-time is going into TAP (TGM2), which is bloody hard.
I don't play any mode other than Death, which by name alone is implied to be difficult, and it is.
I struggle to hit 250, which is a bit low considering most of my Tetris DS rivals are on 400 or higher.
At some point I will get it. I'll stop making dumbass mistakes or letting the rotation screw me over.
The stacking method is different, and it's different in a way that messes you up big time if you're used to Tetris DS, which altogether is a far more generous game in what you can and can't do.
I'll get used to 20G on TAP Death, then I'll go back and get a Gm rank on the original TGM, just to say I have.
Next target after that will be M rank on Death, which will take a while.
And of course, somewhere in all this, I've got 8000 rating to beat on wifi, and 50 seconds for the line clear on Lockjaw.

Friend Games

2007-03-09 16:16:30

The other day I was on worldwide, when I noticed a friend game being hosted by a Japanese name. I joined it, seeing as I wasn't too desperate to go on worldwide, and after a while it got going, with another Japanese name, and NOAH.
I won the first match, because I didn't realise it was without items, so it didn't really count. Playing without items, I wasn't so hot, and ended up losing the next few games. While watching their screens, I saw some pretty amazing t-spin plays. Both fast, and creative, and with several set-ups I'd never seen before.
I warmed up a bit, and won a few games, and probably came 2nd out of the 4 players, with NOAH about 4~5 wins ahead. They were good matches.

Afterwards I went on worldwide 4-player, and I was playing well, so went up 50 points in a few games. It was getting late, so I decided to quit, but as I was about to, I noticed Charly hosting a 4p game, so I joined.

Now I was playing well, but things went horribly awry in that 4p. Now, no offence to Charly or his friends, but I should have battered them, especially playing like I was before, but somehow I lost miserably. Basically, I was trying far too hard to concentrate on pure speed, so was trying to play faster than I could, and was misdropping all over the place. Had it been a proper worldwide match, I would have paced myself and probably won. Still, they were also good matches.

God bless friend games, and Blockstats IRC chat.

Wierd...

Was playing today, and my router kept disconnecting.
7 times out of 10 it would D/C my opponent, 2 out of 10 it would D/C me, and the other time it would let me play a match.
I had 2 or 3 bars constantly on my signal, so I dunno what was happening.

It's a shame the hub is broken. It's basically killed blockstats, and enjoyment for high-end Tetris players. There's no ranks anymore. No reason to keep playing for most people.
Still, I have my broadband back, and really would like to break 8000 at last. Currently at 7885.
To try and add something, I'm holding a tournament a TC for anyone who wants to enter.

No Internet

2006-12-09 04:33:47

I moved house last week, and my new house has no internet. Not even dial-up, so I'm kinda cut off from people, which is a shame, especially as Caith reappeared in the chat after me not seeing him for 2 months, and then I disappear.
I also have no wifi, so no Tetris DS has been played this week. Instead I've concentrated on TGM, and I think I've improved slightly. I'm still stuck on S4, but I can consistently get S3 now, and can get past level 500.
I can hit S3 in around 5:30 mins, but after that it starts to go a bit down hill. I need to get to grips better with the rotation.

Polos Aren't Really Laxatives... Uh-Oh.

2006-11-19 05:40:50

Seeing as the Tetris hub is broken, it's kind of left me jaded as far as wifi is concerned. However recently, I've taken it to be a good thing, as it displays me as 7770 or 7798 even if I'm way below, meaning I can experiment, and worry a little less about my score, rather than obsessing about it.
Mostly now I play, with the people from TEC and with the god-players from 2ch. Both laying highly-skilled and not-so-skilled seems to help my game, as I've risen quickly from 7600, where I dropped to after a bad night, back up to 7730.

Outside of Tetris DS, I've started playing Quadra. Totally different to most Tetris games, the gravity is realistic, allowing recursive line clearing, which is interesting to say the least. After a few hours on online multiplayer, I imporved, and got used to the gravity. It also got me used to keyboard-based Tetris, which led me to believe that I would be better at TGM.
Oh no. Not a chance. Now I see what caffeine means when he says that TGM1 has incredibly slow DAS. You hold the right key on TGM, and compared to quadra the piece hardly moves sideways at all. Switching between gravity types can also get a bit confusing, as the stacking is different.
Still, I'll continue playing quadra. Maybe I'll end up as good as this one day:
